Commandant to Step Down
Col. Tom Trumps ’79
LEXINGTON, Va., Oct. 28, 2013 – VMI’s commandant, Col. Tom Trumps ’79, has announced his intent to depart the Institute in the summer of 2014.
Trumps assumed the duties of commandant in 2007. His tenure is the longest period an individual has held the position of commandant since the 27-year tenure of Scott Shipp, who commanded the Corps of Cadets at the Battle of New Market.
“Colonel Trumps has performed superbly in this very demanding and critically important position,” said Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III ’62, superintendent. “He has provided great leadership over the Corps of Cadets, and he has been absolutely integral to creating an environment that instills in cadets the unique attributes that are the hallmark of VMI.”
The Corps of Cadets and VMI will honor Trumps in a farewell review parade in April.
