Wakeel Idewu, Ph.D., P.E. –a native of New Orleans, is a registered engineer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He received a bachelor of science in civil engineering from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and a master of science in engineering science from Louisiana State University. He also earned a doctorate in civil engineering from Louisiana State University and is an assistant professor at Virginia Military Institute. Dr. Idewu has eight years of experience post graduate teaching and transportation engineering and is an expert in simulation modeling using the Vissim platform. He instructs courses and laboratories in Materials for Construction and Civil Engineers; Traffic and Highway Engineering; and Transportation Planning and Evaluation. His most recent work was in the area of human factors and departure choice, vehicle emissions, and work zone traffic control. Recently, one of his work zone traffic control design inventions was successfully implemented in a Canadian work zone under live field conditions.

The overall objective in most of Idewu’s research projects is to create/analyze design features and changes in roadway layouts. The broader impact of his research will help improve the quality of commute for the traveling public. Along those same lines, Idewu has begun exploring transportation’s effect on the environment and, in the process, has developed a methodology to simulate neighborhood-scale vehicle emissions.

Dr. Idewu is married to Roslyn, his wife of seven years, and is the father of a five-year old son and two-year old daughter. He is in continuous pursuit of ways to follow a self-prescribed mission: To invest his gifts in people and creatively use opportunities to fuel potential in every generation.
