Battle of New Market

May 15, 1864

On May 15, VMI commemorated the 150th anniversary of one of the most significant events in its history – the Battle of New Market. The battle represents a rare moment in U.S. history when an entire student body fought as a unit in pitched battle.

The Founding of VMI

November 11, 1839

This year marks the 175th anniversary of VMI’s founding on a snowy day in 1839. Today’s Corps of Cadets, 1,600 strong, has its roots in a quiet ceremony that year on Nov. 11, when 23 cadets relieved guards at what was then a state arsenal. The place looked nothing like today’s VMI post.
