Visiting Professor of Mathematics

Posted Tuesday, September 26, 2017

In support of the launch of a sequence of core mathematics courses for fields not requiring calculus, the Applied Mathematics Department at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is seeking a postdoctoral teaching and educational research fellow.  The launch of these new courses offers an excellent and rare opportunity to perform educational research in a highly supportive setting, as VMI has dedicated a significant amount of resources to this project.  Furthermore, the courses have the potential to address a national need, as they were designed based on the recommendations of the 2014 Forum of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and the 2016 Report, Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction of Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME).  This two-year postdoctoral position is designed to provide an early-career Ph.D. mathematician, applied mathematician, or statistician with an opportunity to perform undergraduate STEM educational research while being mentored by one of the authors of the GAIMME Report and while teaching in one of the top ten undergraduate applied mathematics programs in the nation.  The fellow will be a member of an active community of colleagues who regularly participate in pedagogical faculty development training, including a weeklong immersive training program on enhanced inquiry-based learning and the teaching of mathematical modeling at the beginning of the fellowship.  In addition to teaching and research, the fellowship also offers opportunities to gain experience in writing both research and expository articles for educational journals, grant writing, course design, faculty development, institutional assessment, leadership of multi-section coordinated courses, and interdisciplinary collaboration.  By the end of the fellowship, the fellow should be well positioned to obtain a tenure-track position at an institution seeking to enhance its undergraduate STEM program.

Application information:
In order to receive full consideration, your application must contain a cover letter that includes a statement addressing how this fellowship aligns with your career goals, a current curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses your pedagogical interests and/or teaching experience.  A research statement is not required, but may be included if it addresses educational research interests and/or plans for how you envision modifying your research portfolio to include more educationally focused work.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION RULES

Applicants can submit their application electronically to either https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs (preferred) or the Virginia Jobs listing (link below).
