Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) invites applications for the position of Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Dean of the Faculty. Availability of the position begins on 01 July 2018.The Dean of the Faculty reports directly to the Superintendent (president), the chief administrative officer. The Dean is the principal deputy to the Superintendent and is responsible for the planning, development, administration, and evaluation of all academic and academic-support programs. Further, the Dean is expected to champion academic excellence within a military system.
Candidates must have an appropriate educational background to include an earned doctorate from a recognized, accredited institution. They should also have relevant administrative experience, a reputation for professionalism in dealing with faculty, colleagues, subordinates, and associates, as well as a strong personal and professional commitment to academic excellence. In addition, candidates must have a record of distinguished leadership in positions of increasing responsibility in organizations that may include, but not limited to: an accredited academic institution; the U.S. military; an executive position in a significant business enterprise; or a high level position in a governmental or non- profit organization. Prior military experience, while not required, is desirable, as is an understanding of the mutually supporting roles of the military and academic cultures of a military college.
VMI is an undergraduate military college of engineering, liberal arts, and sciences located in a small, historic college town. It enrolls approximately 1,650 cadets, both men and women, and all cadets live on the VMI Post in barracks. Faculty, administrators, and cadets wear military uniforms and observe military customs and courtesies.
