Francis H. Smith, circa 1862Francis H. Smith was Superintendent of VMI for fifty years, from the Institute's founding in 1839 until his retirement in 1889. He died in 1890.  These letters from the 1859-1860 academic year cover many critical issues that arose as the prospect of Civil War seemed increasingly likely, as well as providing insight into the routines of antebellum life at VMI.
