Gaylord B. Clark PhotoAbout this Album

Many cadets of the 1860's and 1870's compiled photograph albums to mark their graduation from VMI. The elaborate leather-bound albums included photographs of classmates, friends, faculty and VMI buildings, along with other collectible images. The albums typically contained carte de visite images; as the name implies, these small photographs were the size of personal "calling" or "visiting" cards, and were exchanged among friends much as today's students exchange school photos. These keepsake albums were popular in the years before the publication of yearbooks.

The album presented here belonged to New Market Cadet Gaylord B. Clark (left). Clark, born in Mobile, Alabama in 1846, was the son of Francis Barnard Clark, a railroad builder, and Helen Mary Shepherd. Clark entered VMI on August 26, 1863 and on May 15, 1864 he participated in the Battle of New Market as a private in Cadet Company D. He was graduated from VMI on July 4, 1867, standing third in a class of eleven. He subsequently read law and practiced his profession in Mobile. He married Lettice Lee Smith in 1881; they had three children. Clark died on June 14, 1893 and is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama.
