1. All courtesies and procedures described above apply whether the uniform, VMI blazer, or civilian clothes are worn. Even when in gym dyke, cadets should render the salute as appropriate.

  2. When outdoors during the playing of the "National Anthem" or "To The Colors", stand at attention and place the right hand over the heart. If wearing a hat, remove it and place it at the left shoulder in such position that the right hand is over the heart.

  3. If military personnel in civilian clothes recognize each other, the exchange of salutes is appropriate.
