If a cadet on foot observes a vehicle with star plates (general officer plates) or recognizes an officer in a vehicle, he/she should salute.
Whether or not to salute while in a moving vehicle differs between the different branches, however, for safety's sake, like the army, VMI's policy is that drivers of motor vehicles salute only when the vehicle is at a halt and the engine is not running.
The exchange of salutes is not required between persons in different vehicles except when a vehicle is clearly marked by prescribed methods to indicate the presence of a general officer or when required as a part of a ceremony.
Salutes are rendered between persons dismounted from or in halted vehicles.
Salutes are not rendered in public
