The 35 cadets who will be conducting research in the coming months with the VMI Summer Undergraduate Research Institute are members of “a very select and honored group,” Col. Jim Turner, director of undergraduate research told the cadets at a reception in early May.

“There were three times as many applications as in past years,” Turner said. “The competition is becoming tougher and tougher.”

The summer program will take place May 20-June 18 and June 21-July 23. The awards are supported by the Jackson-Hope Fund, VMI Research Laboratories, and several departments across Post. The cadets represent nearly all majors.

The following cadet-mentor pairs will pursue research in biology: Maj. Leah Stands and Cadet Vanessa Berrios ’07; Col. Jim Turner and Cadet Bryan Nelson ’07; Lt. Col. Wade Bell and Cadet Eri Kamura ’07; and Maj. Robert Humston and Cadet Brant Priest ’07.

In civil engineering, Maj. Charles Bott and cadets Christopher Brandriff ’06, John Fox ’06, and Cadet Ian Camper ’06; Col. Dale Buckner and Cadet Ahmed Safy El-Din ’07; and Col. Peter Hoadley and Cadet Komgrit Kotcharaksa ’07.

SURI supports the goals of the VMI Undergraduate Research Initiative (URI), which aims to more fully integrate student scholarly inquiry into the VMI experience by promoting educational development through the close association of faculty mentors and their students.
