Colonel Tom Trumps, Assistant Coach

A 1979 graduate of VMI, Colonel (US Army, retired) Tom Trumps’ rugby career began while a high school student in Brussels, Belgium.  During his VMI cadetship, he was an A-side center for three years and captained the team that went 19-4-1 his senior year.  After graduating and commissioning in the US Army, he spent the next ten years playing club and select-side rugby for El Paso RFC; Fort Stewart RFC; and Northern Virginia (NOVA) RFC.  From 1985-89, he was a select-side winger and fullback for the All-Army and Combined Services (All-Military) teams.  As a Combined Services player, he represented the US military on two separate rugby tours to England in the late ‘80s.  In 1994-95, while stationed at the Pentagon, he returned to NOVA RFC as an assistant coach.  Col Trumps is a USA Rugby Level 1 Certified Coach.

Colonel Trumps retired from the US Army in 2003 and was selected as VMI’s Commandant of Cadets in March 2007.  As Commandant, he is responsible for the daily training regimen of VMI’s Corps of Cadets.
