Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering cadets coauthored a paper that was published in IEEE Potentials.

This is the primary electrical engineering magazine distributed to all IEEE student members and enjoys an international readership of over 100,000.

John Puvogel ('04), Paul Kuwik ('05), Thomas Largi ('05) and Dennis Crump ('06) wrote the article "Smart Medical Refrigerator," on an internet-aware insulin storage refrigerator that monitors the frequency of a patient's insulin dosing, paging the patient's family or doctor if dosing is more than 8 hours late, such as would happen if the patient suffered a diabetes-induced illness.

The device was tested by a Rockbridge Country diabetic family under the supervision of Joseph Troise, M.D., and advised by professors Jim Squire and Dave Livingston. The cadets earned a patent-pending for the device, and Paul Kuwik is currently working with Mike Sebastino to license the intellectual property and is using his experience as the basis for his honors thesis.
