GPA Computations

The spreadsheet that is labeled GPA computation is useful to keep accurate records and to allow the cadet the opportunity to anticipate his/her GPA during the current semester by adding anticipated grades or midterm grades for the currently enrolled courses at VMI. Each semester the cadet simply enters courses, credit hours and the grade. Completed courses would have actual grades; currently enrolled courses would have anticipated/midterm grades.

The spreadsheet that is labeled rebuilding a GPA is designed to help cadets to determine what actions are needed to attain the minimum GPA and hour requirements for readmissions.

Step 1 - Place Credit Hours attempted from the bottom row (column 1)of the cadet's VMI transcript in cell B3.

Step 2 - Place Quality Points from the bottom row Column 3) of the cadet's VMI transcript in cell E3.

Step 3 - Classify future actions between the following categories:

  • Repeating courses at VMI which will delete the former grade and replace the grade with the most recent grade even if the more recent grade is lower.
  • Repeating courses away from VMI which must be approved for transfer credit before enrolling to ensure transfer credit.
  • New courses at VMI.
  • New course taken away from VMI which will increase hours but not GPA.

Step 4 - Enter proposed action based on the respective categories:

  • Repeating courses at VMI
    Column A - Course Title
    Column B - Credit Hours
    Column C - Current Grade
    Column D - Proposed Grade
  • Repeating courses away from VMI
    Column A - Course Title
    Column B - Credit Hours
    Column C - Current Grade
    Column D - the letter T
  • New courses at VMI
    Column A - Course Title
    Column B - Credit Hours
    Column C - Not Applicable
    Column D - Proposed Grade
  • New course taken away from VMI which will increase hours but not GPA.
    Column A - Course Title
    Column B - Credit Hours
    Column C - not applicable
    Column D - not applicable
