Richard Rowe, Ph.D.

My research interests fall into two main areas: distribution of birds within the greater Rockbridge County, Virginia, area and vocal communication in birds.  My work on the birds of Rockbridge County represents a compilation of birding records for the area over the past 100 years.  My interests in avian communication focus on the changes in male songs from the establishment of a territory through the acquisition of a mate and successful breeding.  In addition, I am interested in the ability of birds to vary the character and thus the information content of alarm calls, and whether some or all of this information can be understood by members of a different species.
