Dr. Raymond MacDermott earned his B.A. in Math and Economics from Ithaca College and his M.A. in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his Ph.D. in Economics at Rutgers University in 2004.

Dr. MacDermott began his academic career in 2001. He joined the faculty at the Virginia Military Institute in 2006, where he initially taught economics. Following his completion of the AACSB Post- Doctoral Bridge to Business Program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2011, he transitioned his teaching focus to marketing. He currently teaches courses in Principles of Marketing, International Marketing, and Marketing Management.

His research interests focus on the interplay between culture, institutions, and migration on entrepreneurship, trade, and foreign direct investment. He also engages in pedagogical research pertaining to student engagement, learning outcomes, and the impact of assessment policy on student performance.
