As the oldest state-supported military college in the nation, VMI immerses its Corps of Cadets into a professional military environment, providing discipline, training, and skills that serve each graduate beyond the Limits Gates, whether they choose to commission or not.
Military life is a full-time experience at VMI. All cadets operate under the same master schedule. They all live together on post in barracks and govern themselves within the cadet regimental system. They wear the uniform of the day, participate in drills and challenges, and work together within their company, their battalion, and the Corps as a whole to represent themselves, their brother rats, and the Institute with honor and pride.
From fitness tests and early morning PT, to drill competitions and proficiency development, cadets are held to the highest standards while wearing the VMI uniform.
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps
The ROTC experience is an integral part of life at VMI. It challenges cadets to focus on strengthening both mind and body while pursuing ideals of discipline, honor, and respect.
As officers in the military, Institute graduates find themselves at an advantage because they have trained alongside other branches of the armed forces and have a deeper knowledge and affinity for working together. Significant financial support is available through VMI’s ROTC program for qualified cadets.
The Military Mission
From their very first day on post, matriculants must embrace the traditions and expectations of 24-7 military life. They are fitted for their uniforms, are called down to join their company and take their cadet oath, and begin their first march of many down to barracks.
From there, the Corps spends the next four years perfecting their military bearing and skills not only through their ROTC participation, but from living and breathing as a regiment. Those who excel become leaders of the Corps, guiding the next recruits through the time-honored traditions and customs of No Ordinary College.
