The Air Force ROTC program at VMI is the 7th largest of 145 detachments. It prepares cadets for service in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force air, space, and cyberspace domains under the Department of the Air Force.

Studying Applied Mathematics at VMI provides a foundation for careers in operations research, statistics, or computational mathematics found in military, government, and private business and industry sectors.

VMI Army ROTC is unique in its success rate of commissioning more officers than any other ROTC program in the United States. By joining the battalion, you are joining a unit dedicated to excellence and achievement, with strong faculty and cadet leadership.

Approximately 175 dedicated staff members and contractors in Auxiliary Services work to ensure that the Corps of Cadets has everything it needs for day-to-day operations and life at the Institute. Each department in Auxiliary Services strives to enhance the experience of cadets, faculty, staff, and visitors on Post by providing high-quality goods and services, especially to meet the expanded needs of college students who are also elite cadets learning, training, and developing into leaders at the oldest state-supported military college in the nation.

The biology department provides focused studies in the biological sciences to prepare students for careers in medicine and other health professions, field work related to conservation and ecology and other technical pursuits including graduate school.

The Cadet Accounting office currently provides support services such as payments, payment plans and promissory notes. All of these services are also available electronically for cadets and families.

Career Services at VMI focuses on outcomes by providing resources and services for cadets to assist them in their needs relative to career planning, career experiences, and employment or graduate education opportunities.

The Center offers free, confidential, individual counseling to help cadets address personal and interpersonal concerns or stressors. Our goal is to help cadets capitalize on these strengths by developing new skills and insight to better navigate concerns in the future.

VMI's Center for Leadership and Ethics (CLE) is dedicated to educating, engaging, and inspiring cadets, faculty, and staff in the development of leadership and character. The CLE provides opportunities to develop new skills and enhance leadership learning, empowering leaders to think critically, solve problems, and make ethical decisions.

The VMI Center for Undergraduate Research (VCUR) promotes and facilitates faculty-mentored undergraduate research, providing engaging programs, presentation opportunities, and research resources and funding.

The mission of the Chaplain’s Office is to ensure the free exercise of religion and to provide pastoral care regardless of religious affiliation. The office serves as a key support system for cadets during the unique college experiences at VMI.

The chemistry department provides cadets who major in chemistry with a strong foundation in chemistry, mastery of modern chemical instrumentation, excellent analytical and mathematical skills, and the ability to think things through and solve problems.

The chief of staff is responsible for coordinating the actions of the Institute’s primary staff officers and ensuring integration of all organizational and post operations, events, and issues.

The department offers a curriculum that includes a traditional array of course that allows cadets to pursue different subdisciplines after graduation. Cadets that successfully complete the curriculum receive an ABET accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering (CE).

The Coast Guard Auxiliary University Program (AUP) is designed to provide a continuous resource of well-trained officer candidates who will excel in the United States Coast Guard or a similar service agency, without the commitment of an ROTC.

VMI's commandant is responsible for the daily military regimen of the Corps of Cadets, continuously creating challenging leadership and training experiences that reinforce cadet success.

C&M provides a variety of services including providing news to the VMI community; developing and maintaining VMI websites and social media channels; capturing photos and video; marketing the benefits and uniqueness of the Institute, and designing and preparing publications for print.

This academic department provides cadets the opportunity to experience the whole lifecycle of modern computer software systems from requirements analysis and representation to system and software design, development, and maintenance.

The Cyber Defense Laboratory (CyDef) is a VMI conduit to grow the pipeline of next generation cybersecurity leaders. CyDef provides an innovative curriculum with integrated leadership development and fusion of rigorous experiential and immersive learning.

VMI's chief academic officer oversees curriculum, majors, support services, governance, faculty, staff, and all things relating to the academic program.

The position oversees a broad spectrum of offices including finance and budget, auxiliary services, facilities management, infirmary, counseling, and the VMI museum system.

Disabilities Services at the Miller Academic Center supports the academic success, personal growth and development of life and leadership skills for cadets in a manner that promotes self-awareness, self-determination, and self-advocacy.

The Office of Diversity, Opportunity, and Inclusion (DOI) strives to ensure that every member of the VMI community, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or nationality, feels a part of the VMI legacy.

The Department of Economics and Business (ECBU) develops effective leaders with the knowledge and skills to solve the challenges of a diverse and dynamic global business environment. The degree includes the essentials of a double major with a rigorous course of study, focused on quantitative methods and skills.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) educates cadets in a rigorous academic environment that nurtures the development of analytic and communications skills applied to the design of electrical and computer engineering hardware and software components and systems.

VMI is committed to the safety and well-being of our cadets and employees. The Office of Emergency Management leads the Institute’s efforts to prepare for and respond to a wide range of situations—including severe weather, medical emergencies, and other potential threats.

The English major curriculum offers courses in writing, rhetoric, literature, philosophy, and the visual arts, each of which encourages cadets to engage their world through critical, cross-disciplinary inquiry.

Facilities Management provides excellence in service and the highest quality in all we do to ensure the physical plant, facilities, and infrastructure support the overall mission of VMI. It includes the offices of Planning and Sustainability, Engineering and Construction, Physical Plant and Facilities Maintenance, and Certified Energy Management.

The Finance and Budget Office is responsible for receipt and disbursement of Institute funds, compliance with Federal, State and industry-specific policies and regulations, and includes: budget, cadet accounting, financial accounting & reporting, payroll, procurement, and account payables offices.

Virginia Military Institute considers its financial aid program an important and worthwhile investment in its cadets' futures. The financial aid team connects students with funding opportunities and simplifies the process from application through graduation, helping cadets and families make the most of their education dollars.

The Office of Global Education (OGE) offers opportunities designed to prepare young leaders for successful service in an increasingly global environment through study, research, and internships abroad. OGE also supports international cadets pursuing a degree at VMI, as well as semester exchange cadets.

Government Relations is responsible for supporting the academic, military and co-curricular programs of the Institute through effective advocacy at the federal and state levels of government and compliance with successful legislation.

The history deparment provides a curriculum that prepares cadets for careers in law, business, politics, government service, and the armed forces. History courses emphasize an understanding of developments and problems, and give attention to social, economic, cultural, political and constitutional problems.

The VMI Infirmary offers all the services usually found at a private doctor's office in addition to needs specific to VMI. The VMI Infirmary is open and staffed by a nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the regular academic year.

The Department of Information Technology (IT) serves as the management and support group for all technological services offered at VMI. From maintenance to training courses, the continually modernizing program provides many courses aimed at promoting learning and assisting faculty and staff.

Innovation Programming leads VMI in developing academic, industry, and government partnerships seeking to offer innovative experiences across the academic curriculum to cadets through collaborative oppoprtunities and hands-on experiences, including the Summer Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Program (SUEP).

The Inspector General undertakes or supervises official investigations that are not specifically delegated to other agencies or as assigned by the superintendent, reporting findings as directed, consistent with legal requirements.

The Institute Honors Program enriches the academic experience of VMI's outstanding cadets through activities that encourage an affinity for intellectual inquiry and develop the capacity for sophisticated engagement of issues and problems, whether ethical, civic, or professional.

To ensure the development of strong written communication abilities, the Institute writing program’s curriculum provides sequential, sustained writing instruction and support throughout the cadets' academic careers at VMI. Professional tutors in the Writing Center consult individually with cadets at any stage of a writing project.

Institutional Research, Planning, & Assessment (IRPA) provides data, information, research, and analysis; creates operational business reports; fulfills compliance reporting mandates; and assists in the evaluation and coordination of institutional effectiveness at VMI.

The board oversees, approves, and regulates research involving human participants by students (cadets, faculty and staff at VMI as well as the research done by others that includes VMI faculty, staff, or students.

The department believes in graduating cadets who are politically, economically and culturally fluent in all the regions of the globe: foreign study and foreign language competence are encouraged and emphasized as critical parts of the degree program.

This museum in downtown Lexington preserves Jackson’s former home and its collections, educating the public by interpreting the life, character, and times of Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.

With an endowment goal of $50 million, the Jackson-Hope Fund provides a unique source of support for especially promising academic initiatives that might otherwise languish in competition for the Institute’s resources.

At the Math Resource Center, cadets and tutors work together to assess math skills of incoming students and improve those skills to achieve their goals while at the Institute. The center is open to any cadet whether they are striving for an A or struggling to pass classes.

The deaprtment offers a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, a concentration in Aerospace Engineering, and a concentration in Nuclear Engineering. Career paths for graduates may include aerospace, power, HVAC, bioengineering, manufacturing, and management.

The Miller Academic Center (MAC) helps cadets transition to college academics and college life. Peer tutoring and group study sessions (GSS) are available for a number of core courses including science, history, and foreign languages.

This academic department offers basic and advanced training in the languages, literatures, and cultures of France, Spain and Latin America, China, and the Middle East. Students are introduced to literary masterpieces, and through these they become familiar with the history, thought, and civilization of the countries where the language is spoken.

The Naval ROTC (NROTC) Unit at VMI is one of four NROTC units in Virginia and 77 nationwide, merging the finest traditions of VMI and the Naval Service. NROTC provides two programs in which cadets may enroll, US Navy or US Marine Corps, and offers scholarships to qualified cadets.

The Operations & Planning Office at VMI plays a vital role in supporting institutional effectiveness through comprehensive planning, resource coordination, and operational oversight.

At VM,I a dedicated faculty train and work with talented students to explore exciting areas of physics and astronomy. Topics within the department include: lasers & fiber optics, nanotechnology, molecular spectroscopy, and nuclear physics.

VMI helps guide cadets in their journey to secure national postgraduate scholarships and participate in pre-professional programs in law and health professions. VMI's 11 Rhodes Scholars—and numerous others, including Gates Cambridge, Marshall, Goldwater, and Fulbright Scholars—exemplify the value of the unique experience found at the Institute.

The Library is integral to the successful teaching and learning experience at VMI. We provide users with robust reference and research services, and access to a wide range of resources for use in the classroom, in cadet and faculty learning, and in research endeavors.

This office provides guidance and support for purchasing, contract, vendors within VASCUPP and eVa, supplier certification, and manages the SWaM program for the Institute. It also manages accounting and travel policies and procedures.

The Protocol Office provides direct support for visitors involved with the Superintendent and his staff. The office provides protocol guidance and direction with itineraries, seating plans, flag courtesies, and escort duties for all departments or staff who have distinguished visitors at VMI.

Students taking courses within this department gain a solid knowledge of psychological terms, concepts, theories, methods, and issues. They develop the ability to gather and synthesize information from a variety of sources, inside and outside the classroom, and learn about the human condition.

Band Company is one of ten companies which make up the Corps of Cadets. Rank structure, academic major, class structure, and athletic structure is identical to the rest of the Corps at large. Cadets may also train to participate in Pipe Band.

The Registrar's Office provides records management, course scheduling, degree certification, and diploma processing, registration, grading and evaluations, transcript processing, academic standards review, statistical reporting, support of ad hoc requests, and FERPA compliance.

Equivalent to a college or university president, the superintendent is hired by the Board of Visitors and works with that governing body to determine policies and procedures for ensuring Institute success.

Under the direction of the Inspector General, the Title IX Office at VMI understands the responsibility of taking appropriate action toward eliminating sexual misconduct of any kind, and is dedicated to promoting and fostering a safe environment for all cadets, staff, and faculty.

Located in New Market, Virginia, this museum provides opportunities to reflect upon the Battle of New Market which raged just outside on May 15, 1864 and is famous for the participation by cadets from VMI. In addition to museum exhibit galleries, the site features the state-certified Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, an Emmy-winning film, Field of Lost Shoes shown every hour, and a 300-acre battlefield park preserving the core areas of the battlefield and historic Bushong Farm.

All sports at VMI compete at the NCAA Division I level. Teams are fielded in baseball, basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, football, lacrosse, men’s and women’s rifle, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, women’s water polo and wrestling.

From the mounted hide of "Little Sorrel," "Stonewall" Jackson's favorite horse, to seven Medals of Honor awarded to VMI alumni, the VMI Museum chronicles the story of the nation's first state sponsored military college. Founded in 1845, the VMI Museum was the first public museum in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The VMI Police Department is staffed by 14 certified police officers and six security officers who provide safety and security 24-hours a day. Our officers are responsible for crime prevention, traffic enforcement and the investigation and prosecution of all criminal offenses that occur on post (campus), at any of VMI’s outlying properties and on the streets and sidewalks adjoining post.

For over 50 years, VMI cadets, faculty, staff, and friends from the Lexington-Rockbridge community have produced more than 180 dramas, comedies, mysteries, revues, and musicals. Performances take place in the beautiful Leslie Gillis, Jr. '29 Theater within Marshall Hall on post. VMI Community Theatre is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit performing group to offer theatrical opportunities to performers and tech-support staff in the VMI-Lexington-Rockbridge area.

The Writing Center complements and extends the writing instruction cadets receive in the classroom by providing help with a full range of activities to improve their writing, at any level and in any discipline.
