Dedicated staff members and teams at VMI work diligently to provide a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all cadets, employees, and visitors to post.
Cadet-Specific Resources
The Commandant of Cadets and his staff oversee the military training and day-to-day life on post, especially within barracks and during physical activities. Prior to Matriculation, the Commandant provides a program to assist incoming students prepare physically for the rigorous nature of VMI.
The Infirmary offers all the services usually found at a private doctor’s office in addition to needs specific to VMI. The Infirmary is open and staffed by a nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the regular academic year.
The religious freedom of all cadets is assured through the Chaplains’ Office. In addition to faith-based work on post, the office also serves as a point of support and contact for members of the Corps as they navigate life at VMI.
Managed by the Office of Auxiliary Services and Parkhurst, dining at VMI for cadets is committed to supplying meal and menu options best suited to the unique needs of a military college. Dining service operations run daily from 0700 to 2000 hours seven days a week, anytime cadets are on post.
Cadet & Employee Resources
The Inspector General’s office receives reports of alleged violations of Title IX, Title VI, and Title VII Acts. The reports are resolved or investigated, with the office recommending corrective actions to the appropriate authorities.
Events and trainings are offered throughout the year for cadets.

The office strives to ensure that every member of the VMI community, regardless of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or nationality, feels a part of the VMI legacy.
DOI also coordinates events throughout the year to offer learning opportunities about the cultures of VMI and the world.

VMI has a fully trained and certified Police Department which provides for the safety and security of the Institute 24-hours a day.

Thanks to a well-supported and long-standing club, VMI events are staffed by a fully trained and certified team of Cadet EMTs, ready to step in and serve.
Post-Wide Safety, Planning, and Management
VMI is committed to informing the community of an emergency, disaster or potential disaster immediately upon determining the nature of the emergency.
Threat Assessment is a committee comprised of legal, medical, mental health, law enforcement, student affairs, and human resources professionals charged with assessing and managing threats of violence.
