Dr. Baur, a native of Lexington, VA, joined the faculty in 2019 following two years as an assistant professor at Elon University. He teaches courses in exercise, endurance, and occupational/environmental physiology along with core and required courses within the Human Performance and Wellness curriculum. He earned a B.A in History and Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Thereafter, he earned degrees in Exercise Physiology from James Madison University (Master’s) and Florida State University (Ph.D.). His graduate research focused on exercise metabolism, sport nutrition, and human performance. Specifically, he investigated effects of novel carbohydrate supplementation strategies on physiology and endurance performance. Dr. Baur is the son of Dr. Thomas S. Baur ’75 who taught exercise physiology in the VMI Biology Department (1989-2013). When outside the classroom and laboratory, he enjoys running and hiking on the many trails and backroads throughout the county.

Dr. Baur’s research broadly investigates military and endurance performance. Specific interests include the physiological effects of heavy load carriage in different environmental conditions (including simulated altitude); sex differences; sport nutrition and ergogenic aids; and sport physiology and performance.
