Mr. Doran serves as the Recruiting Operations Officer for the Blue Ridge Battalion, Army ROTC Department, Virginia Military Institute. A native of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the Navy in 1982 and was assigned to the USS Patterson in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Army in 1989 and was commissioned in 1991 through Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, GA and branched into the Field Artillery.
Upon completion of the Field Artillery Officer’s Basic Course, his first duty assignment was at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he served as a Fire Support Officer in 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized). Mr. Doran deployed in support of Desert Guardian with 5th Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, as the unit’s Fire Support Officer. He then assumed the duties as Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, and Executive Officer in 1st Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery, Fort Hood, Texas. Following the Field Artillery Officer’s Advanced Course, where he graduated Master Warfighter, Mr. Doran was assigned to Saint John’s University, Saint Cloud, Minnesota as the MS I and MS III ROTC course instructor.
In 1996, Mr. Doran was assigned to the 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania Army National Guard where he was posted to serve as the Assistant Brigade S4. In 1998, he was assigned as Training Officer for 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, 56th IBCT and was concurrently assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, where he served as a Rifle Company Commander.
Following Command and General Staff College, Mr. Doran was assigned to XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he served as the NORTHCOM Planner, G-3 Plans. In 2008, Mr. Doran deployed with XVIII Airborne Corps where he served in the G-5 Future Plans, Victory Base, Iraq. Mr. Doran commanded the 2nd Battalion, 312th Regiment, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. In 2012, following battalion command, he assumed duties as Team Chief, Security Force Adviser Team 25, Kandahar, Afghanistan. In 2013, Mr. Doran was selected to attend senior service college at the US Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
In 2014, he served as the Senior Army National Guard Advisor, Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, Louisiana. He then transitioned to Chief, Reserve Component Integrations Officer, 7th Army Training Command, Grafenwoehr, Germany. In 2018, he was assigned to US Central Command, as Deputy Chief, Forces Division, J-3 Directorate, MacDill Air Force Base.
Mr. Doran holds an undergraduate degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from Spring Garden College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a Masters in Science in Leadership and Business Ethics from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. His military education includes the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms Services Staff College, Quartermaster and Infantry Advanced Courses, and the Joint Forces Staff College.

Mr. Doran is married to the former Kathleen Newland of Royersford, Pennsylvania. They have three sons who serve in the Army, CPT John Doran II, Dr. (CPT) Justin Doran, and Dr. (CPT) Jarred Doran.
