Fire Safety Report

Virginia Military Institute has taken extensive measures to minimize fire hazards in the Barracks and in other Institute facilities.

Recent renovations to the Barracks complex included the installation of an extensive sprinkler system.  There is a facility-wide alarm system.  Academic, administrative, and support buildings are similarly equipped.  The fire alarm system is connected with the local fire department.

Cadets are prohibited from using electrical appliances, including microwave ovens, hot pots, heating elements, etc.  In addition, flammable materials, such as candles, fireworks, etc., are also prohibited.

Procedures for evacuating the Barracks is posted throughout the facility. Cadets and employees will leave by the nearest exit and form up on the Parade Ground in designated locations to allow accountability.  Briefings concerning procedures to be followed are provided annually.

Cadets or employees should report fires to the Guard Room or to a member of the commandant’s staff.  Employees in other facilities should report fires to the building coordinator.

A paper copy of this report can be requested by calling 540-464-7017.
