VMI actively recruits top academic talent and provides all students a path to expand their academic horizons and abilities.
Two programs are specifically designed to challenge these young men and women to participate in
intellectual inquiry, research, and sophisticated engagements of issues and problems beyond the traditional academic program on an undergraduate university. Both also provide funding opportunities for qualified cadets.
Institute Scholars
Institute Honors
Peay Merit Scholarships
Equal to some of most prestigious scholarships presented to students at colleges and universities across the nation, the Peay Merit Scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, room, board, and fees for the full cadetship to recipients who maintain excellence in academics and extracurricular activities that align with the qualities of character associated with the Institute’s 14th Superintendent, General J.H. Binford Peay III: exceptional leadership, academic achievement, athletic commitment, and demonstrated interest in national service.

Achievement for All
All cadets at VMI are provided programs and opportunities — both required and optional — to enhance their classroom experience and success as well as challenge themselves to go beyond the baseline requirements of their degree programs and achieve excellence during their undergraduate program and beyond.
Institute Writing
The Institute Writing Program seeks to equip cadets for both academic success and participation in the full range of rhetorical occasions they will encounter in their lives as citizens and professionals.
To ensure the development of strong written communication abilities, the program’s curriculum provides sequential, sustained writing instruction and support throughout the cadets’ academic careers at VMI. A rigorous two-course sequence in first-year composition is paired with a minimum of two upper-level courses that are officially designated as writing-intensive (W). At least one of these courses must be in the cadet’s major.
