Clubs
The Cyber Captains actively participate in several student organizations, including the Programming Club, Cyber Club, and Drone Club. One dedicated team also leads various outreach initiatives, visiting local middle schools, high schools, and the Rockbridge Regional Library to engage young learners in hands-on STEM activities. Their sessions introduce students to topics such as encryption, drone assembly and flight, and virtual reality (VR) technologies.
Cyber Club
The VMI Cyber Club is a student-led organization at the Virginia Military Institute that brings together cadets who share an interest in cybersecurity, information technology, and digital defense. The club provides hands-on opportunities to learn about network security, ethical hacking, cyber defense strategies, and emerging technologies through workshops, competitions, and guest speakers. Members often participate in national and regional cyber competitions, where they test their skills in real-world scenarios while representing VMI. Beyond technical training, the club fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership, preparing cadets for both military and civilian careers in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. It serves as a hub for collaboration, professional development, and innovation within the Institute’s community.

Through research, training, competitions, and collaborative projects, the club fosters a culture of integrity, innovation, and resilience in the face of evolving digital threats.
The vision of the VMI Cyber Club is to build a community of future leaders who are prepared to protect and defend critical information systems in both military and civilian sectors. The club strives to be a recognized center of excellence in cyber education, empowering cadets to contribute to national security and technological advancement.

Drones and Internet of Things (IoT) Club
The Drones and Internet of Things (IoT) Club at VMI is dedicated to fostering an environment where cadets can explore, innovate, and develop expertise in drone technology and IoT solutions. The club provides a platform for hands-on learning, research, and collaboration, preparing cadets for these emerging technologies’ military and civilian applications.
Enhance the cadet experience in:
- Military Application:
- Provides exposure to drone technology and IoT systems relevant to modern military operations.
- Offers training in drone piloting and maintenance, including FAA drone certification.
- Encourages teamwork and leadership through structured project teams.
- Academic Growth:
- Develops technical knowledge in drone engineering, AI, networking, and IoT applications.
- Enhances problem-solving and critical thinking through hands-on projects and challenges.
- Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration with other VMI academic departments.
- Intellectual Engagement:
- Encourages innovative thinking by applying drones and IoT solutions to real-world scenarios.
- Fosters mentorship through tutoring sessions on drone and IoT-related topics.
- Facilitates research and development projects contributing to unmanned aerial systems and smart technology.
Activities include:
Hands-on Workshops: Training sessions on drone assembly, programming, flying, and maintenance. The club has organized multiple sessions in the past, inviting industry and military experts and planning for more events.
IoT Innovation Projects: Building smart devices and integrating IoT with drones for various applications. Testing drone detection for security and integrating drones with user cameras for surveillance. Fixing old drones and purchasing over ten new drones of different models.
Drone Racing Events: Organizing friendly competitions to develop piloting skills and teamwork. One race event was performed last year, and planning for more.
Collaboration with Other Clubs and Departments: Club members from different departments, including CIS, ECE, IS, and ECBU.
FAA Drone Pilot Certification: Providing cadets and VMI staff members the opportunity to train for and obtain official drone pilot licenses. One staff member and cadets have already been sponsored.
Community Engagement: Conducting demonstrations and outreach programs to promote STEM education. Over ten events and sessions have been organized.
Research and Development: Encouraging cadets to work on research initiatives related to drone swarming, surveillance, and automation. Two research publications have already been published in peer-reviewed conferences.

Programming Club
The purpose of the VMI Programming Club is to inspire cadets to develop and enhance their problem-solving and programming skills while applying them to real-world challenges. The club also provides exposure to various programming languages and helping cadets to explore potential career paths. Finally, the club aims to expose cadets to intercollegiate programming competitions to foster practical experience.
The club uses various tools and activities to engage cadets, including invitation guest speakers, faculty, videos, websites, and practices on problem-solving using various programming languages. Further more, cadets engage in project-based activities and participation in intercollegiate programming and Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions.

Outreach Activities
Dr. Sherif Abdelhamid, as Outreach Liaison Officer for VMI’s Cyber Defense Laboratory, leads an active program of engagement with middle schools, high schools, and local libraries to spark interest in cyber and digital technologies. His outreach includes hands-on workshops led in collaboration with cadets and community partners, offering students direct experience in drone science, programming, encryption, virtual reality, and cyber awareness. These events are designed not only to introduce foundational technology skills, but also to illuminate educational and career pathways in STEM and cybersecurity for young learners.
Examples of his outreach activities include:
- “Build & Fly with VMI” drone event at New College Institute (students aged 13–18) teaching drone science and piloting. – Featured in VMI News
- Sessions at Rockbridge County High School on secure coding, cryptography, and solving challenges like murder-mystery puzzles using encryption.
- Workshops at Lylburn Downing Middle School involving programming, drone missions, and introducing students to drone technologies.
- Library events (TechXplore series) at Rockbridge Regional Library covering virtual reality, cyber awareness, and artificial intelligence.
