Dr. Bishnu Pandey joined Virginia Military Institute in August 2022, where he teaches General Physics courses and laboratories, as well as Nuclear Physics. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he actively provides nuclear physics research opportunities to VMI cadets.

Dr. Pandey is an experimental nuclear physicist specializing in hypernuclear physics, a focused subfield ofnuclear physics. He is an active member of the Experimental Hypernuclear Physics group at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), one of the nation’s leading groups in this area. He began his graduate studies at Hampton University in Fall 2014. Between 2016 and 2017, he played a central role in constructing a pair of High Momentum Spectrometer wire chambers, which are currently installed in Experimental Hall C at Jefferson Lab and serve as the main tracking detectors.

In 2018, Dr. Pandey joined Experimental Hall A at Jefferson Lab, where he contributed to a series of significant tritium experiments. He was actively involved in detector commissioning, calibrations, data collection, and analysis. One of these tritium experiments provided data for his Ph.D. dissertation. He earned his Ph.D. in May 2021 and subsequently continued at Hampton University as a postdoctoral researcher. During his doctoral and postdoctoral training, he developed strong expertise in detector construction, calibration, and high-precision data analysis.

In the summer of 2022, Dr. Pandey was elected to the Jefferson Lab Hall A Coordinating Committee member and served as the committee’s Secretary in 2023. He has co-authored approximately 38 peer-reviewed publications, which have received more than 2,200 citations, reflecting his significant impact in the field of experimental nuclear physics.

Dr. Pandey’s research focuses on understanding the fundamental building blocks of matter through experimental nuclear physics. His main area of expertise is hypernuclear physics, where he studies the role of strangeness in nuclear systems. He is also interested in exploring the internal structure of the nucleon, including short-range correlations and neutron star physics. Dr. Pandey enjoys the precision work involved in building hardware and calibrating detectors, making sure that each detector operates at their best performance while being used in the experimental hall. He also enjoys nuclear data analysis, where complex and raw data information’s are transformed into meaningful scientific results.
