About the Role

The Development Assistant is a key member of the development team, supporting areas such as annual, planned, and reunion giving. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this role keeps development operations running smoothly — from preparing mailed solicitations to compiling monthly reports. This is a nonexempt, full-time position (37.5 hours per week) with a generous benefits package, a retirement plan, and a competitive starting salary based on qualifications and experience.

Salary Range: $25-28/hourly, commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated skills.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to the development team
  • Support annual, planned, and reunion giving efforts
  • Prepare mailed solicitations and compile monthly reports
  • Maintain the integrity and confidentiality of donor and gift information
  • Assist with office projects and other administrative and development-related initiatives

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Strong analytical skills, good judgment, and initiative
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and collaborate closely with a team
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with tact and diplomacy in sensitive and confidential situations
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge and NXT, or with planned giving, financial planning, or a legal environment, preferred

Why This Role Matters

In this position, you will keep the work of the development team moving, making it possible for colleagues to build lasting relationships with alumni and friends who invest directly in cadets and programs across VMI.
