Graduation

Graduation at Virginia Military Institute is an exciting time for cadets, family, faculty, staff, and the VMI community to celebrate the achievements of 1st Class cadets as they complete their journey at the Institute.

With ceremonies held for Institute Awards, Memorial Parade, Change of Command/Graduation Parade, Commissioning, and Commencement, Graduation celebrates the achievements and excellence of all aspects of a cadetship at VMI.

Commencement

Commencement is the culmination of four years of study at the Institute. The walk across the stage during this ceremony is a moment every graduate remembers.

Commissioning

This ceremony, in which new officers take their commissioning oaths, marks the end of a four-year journey of education, training, and self-discovery and the beginning of a journey of military service.

Institute Awards

Numerous awards recognizing the accomplishments of cadets are presented. Awards are presented by civic groups and the Institute, as well as the ROTC components.

Where can I park?

Satellite parking will be out at Lackey Farm Parking Lot (110 Hines Lane). A shuttle will be provided to pick you up.

No tailgating is permitted during 13-16 May.  Parking is first come, first serve, including handicap parking. 

We do ask that our guests pay attention to the yellow lines on the roads and not park in certain designated locations.  The VMI Police need your assistance and patience to ensure that everyone has the quickest and safest departure from Post possible. 

Parking on the Parade Ground may be permitted but is dependent on inclement weather, check our website for details.

13-16 May – Please pay attention to the traffic patterns for the departure of cadets.  Most of the Corps is being released after the Memorial Parade on 15 May except 1st Class graduating cadets, and 4th Class and selected other cadets.  Each day the area in front of Barracks will be congested with all the cadets trying to depart. 

Where do I order announcements or invitations?

There are two companies VMI deals with when ordering announcements:  

Are tickets required for events?

Tickets are not required for December Commissioning and Commencement. We do ask that families have no more than 10 guests.

What should I wear?

Casual business attire is appropriate for all events.

Are there public restrooms?

Restrooms are located in Foster Stadium, Memorial Hall and Lejeune Hall (located at the end of Third Barracks.)
