Commencement Ceremony

Commencement is the culmination of four years of study at the Institute. The walk across the stage during this ceremony is a moment every graduate remembers.

The commencement ceremony will be livestreamed on this page Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 11 a.m.

Anticipate heavy traffic. Satellite parking will be out at Rockbridge County High School on Greenhouse Road and overflow parking will be permitted at Lowe’s.  A shuttle will be provided to pick you up.  In the event of inclement weather, alternate parking may be necessary. Check the website for alerts or additional information.

Shuttle service will run continuously from satellite parking and all areas across Post from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. and following the ceremony.

Foster Stadium will open at 9:30 a.m. Arrive in time to be seated by 10:45 a.m. Seating is on a first-come, first served basis. Due to limited seating, no one will be admitted without a ticket.  Main entrances to Foster Stadium will be main gate and the bridge, all other points of entrance will be closed.  Foster stadium is an outside venue, plan accordingly.   

Due to space constraints and security reasons, coolers, backpacks, and baskets are not allowed at any of the VMI ceremonies. Strollers must be able to be folded and out of the aisles. All carry-in items are subject to search at the door.

Wheelchair seating is available. Handicap drop-off is immediately in front of Cameron Hall. Contact the Chief of Staff's Office at for handicap seating needs. Ticket holders and invited guests with any special access needs may view the proceedings from Gillis Theater in Marshall Hall.

Fully vaccinated attendees do not need to wear a mask. Others must wear face coverings. Social distancing is still in effect per the governor's orders.
