Dr. Feinauer has been a professor of electrical and computer engineering since 2012 and a member of the VMI community since 2020. In addition to his professorial duties, COL F. supports the VMI ECE Department Cadet Mentorship Program and mentors ECE cadets on career readiness and the pursuit of internships. He advises the IEEE Student Branch, supports real-world engineering design through ECE capstone, and mentors students on a variety of multidisciplinary projects through the Institute Honors Program, independent research, and the Cyber Defense Lab. On Post, he serves as Campus Representative for the Goldwater Scholarship, Chair of the Institute Honors Committee, and Director of Research for VMI Research Labs. He volunteers with NCEES, supporting the development of the National Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, and served as a longtime volunteer with FIRST Robotics and was a program partner for FIRST LEGO League.

His scholarly work spans several areas including: automation and control theory, system identification, machine learning applications, energy infrastructure resilience, first-year engineering education experiences, engineering design education, incorporating innovation and entrepreneurship in the engineering classroom, and P-12 engineering outreach. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Feinauer is an avid traveler and has explored 45 of the U.S. States.
