Open House
VMI Open Houses are the best way for high school juniors and seniors to see and experience first-hand what it’s like being a cadet at VMI. This 2-day program is designed to be informational for both students and their parent(s)/guardian(s). Students will learn about all aspects of the VMI experience and stay overnight in Barracks with a current cadet as a host. Parent(s)/guardian(s) will join their student for information sessions and have a Q&A session with parents of current cadets.
Please note that the overnight stay and overall itinerary are subject to change if unforeseen circumstances impact the event. Should any changes occur to a specific Open House program, all registered participants will be notified.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from students and families regarding the unique open house experience at the Institute.
Who can attend Open House, and may I bring guests?
Open House is designed for high school juniors, seniors, and transfer students. Each prospective student may bring up to two guests. While parent or guardian attendance is highly encouraged, students are welcome to attend on their own.
What should I expect during the overnight experience?
Prospective students stay overnight in Barracks with a current cadet host, while parents and guests arrange their own lodging in Lexington. Students should bring a sleeping bag, pillow, toiletries, a change of clothes, and comfortable attire. There is no physical training during the overnight stay.
If you would like to request a specific cadet host, email openhouse@vmi.edu before the event, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request.
What should I wear, and when should I arrive?
Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in Lejeune Hall, with the program beginning at 9:45 a.m. We recommend business casual or neat attire with comfortable walking shoes, as you’ll spend time touring post and academic facilities.
Can I schedule an Admissions interview or request accommodations?
Yes. You may request a one-on-one Admissions interview before the event by completing the online interview request form. If you or a guest requires accessibility accommodations, please contact the Admissions Office at 540-464-7211 at least two weeks before your visit (or as soon as possible).
What if I need to change or cancel my registration?
If your plans change, please let us know as soon as possible. You can cancel or update your registration using the link in your confirmation email, by emailing openhouse@vmi.edu, or by calling 540-464-7211.

Tour VMI’s Historic Post
Cadet Guided Post Tours are available daily. Anyone interested in taking a 40-50 minute walking tour of the historic VMI Post can gather in the lobby of the VMI Museum (2nd floor, Memorial Hall) at 12:15 p.m. No reservations are necessary unless there is a large group. Please call the VMI Museum at 540-464-7334 if you would like to schedule a large group for the tour.
Summer Semester 2026 Tours will be available during the two sessions:
- Session I: May 19 – June 16
- Session II: June 23 – July 22, except July 4 and 5
Fall Semester 2027:
- August 25 – December 10 – no tours November 22-30
Spring Semester 2027:
- January 17 – May 5 – no tours March 20-29
