VMI Receives NSA Designation

The National Security Agency (NSA) has designated Virginia Military Institute as a National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Defense, recognizing VMI’s commitment to cybersecurity education, research, and the development of highly qualified cyber professionals.

The designation became official June 12, 2026, and is effective through academic year 2031. It applies to the Bachelor of Science degree in computer science-cybersecurity track as an NSA-validated cybersecurity Program of Study.

The National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity program establishes rigorous standards for institutions offering cybersecurity education. Schools receiving the designation must demonstrate that their academic programs meet requirements established by the NSA and support the nation’s growing need for skilled cybersecurity professionals.

The recognition highlights VMI’s efforts to advance cyber defense education while building a pipeline of graduates prepared to address increasingly complex cybersecurity threats facing government, industry, and national infrastructure.

The designation also places VMI within the national CAE cybersecurity community, connecting the Institute with other recognized academic institutions, government organizations, and cybersecurity professionals working to strengthen cybersecurity education across the United States.

Cybersecurity has become a critical national security priority as organizations face increasingly sophisticated threats against government systems, businesses, infrastructure, and individuals.

Through its cybersecurity curriculum, laboratories, faculty expertise, research activities, and hands-on learning opportunities, VMI is preparing cadets to enter this rapidly evolving field with both technical knowledge and practical cyber-defense experience.
