Gov. Abigail Spanberger, along with a few members of her administration and some state legislators, visited Virginia Military Institute Oct. 29. While on post she met with Lt. Gen. David Furness ’87 and several staff members, who provided her with an overview of VMI’s mission, vision, values, and the Honor System. She toured several buildings on post including barracks, the Aquatic Center, and the Corps Physical Training Facility. She observed dinner roll call formation and ate lunch with cadets in Crozet Hall. Under a cloudless blue sky in front of barracks, she addressed the entire Corps of Cadets, emphasizing the importance of what VMI means to Virginia and to the entire country.

“I think it is extraordinarily important for us to spend time understanding what makes VMI so special. Now I know that VMI is a special place. It’s a place that’s preparing you all for your future, a place with deep traditions, and a place built on a foundation of honor and service to one another.” Before she concluded, she granted amnesty to those cadets with unserved penalty tours and confinement, who thanked her with applause and cheers.
