Peter “Auggie” Fiorillo ’28, a Virginia Military Institute c­adet double majoring in applied mathematics and physics with a minor in astronomy, was named recipient of the Jack T. Casey STEM Memorial Scholarship at a small reception in Preston Library Oct. 23. Capt. Jack Casey ’19 was one of five Marines killed Feb. 7, 2024, in a CH53E helicopter crash in California during a training flight. Three of the nine members of the VMI High-Powered Rocket Club recently launched medium-powered rockets at the Valley Aerospace Team (VAST) launch site near Monterey, Virginia.

It wasn’t love at first run for Abby Fiorillo ’25. She said her father made her do cross country when she was in high school, but the longer she ran, her love for the sport grew.

VMI cadet Hai-Hsin Huang ’25, an applied mathematics major with a minor in physics, is evaluating cost-efficient exercise programs for the elderly as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) at the Virginia Military Institute.

Brijesh Regeti ’24, a major, and Talli Tarring ’24, a major, worked together on their five-week project titled, “Data Analysis of United Way Donors” to research ways the organization can attract new donors.

Kevin Linko ’23, a physics major from Princeton, New Jersey, minored in mathematics and astronomy. Soon he will begin his professional career with CACI, a company that provides expertise and technology to customers in support of national security missions and government transformation.

Four cadets participated in the Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at Princeton University in January. Grace Waters ‘23, Talli Tarring ‘24, Abby Fiorillo ‘25 and Angelina Garcia ‘25 were the four in attendance and are all members of the Women in Science Engineering (WiSe) group at VMI.
