Open House FAQs

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from students and families regarding the unique open house experience at the Institute.

What time should I arrive?

The registration process will begin at 8:00 a.m. in Lejeune Hall. The opening session begins at 9:45 a.m. in Marshall Hall.

What should I wear?

We encourage all attendees to wear business casual attire or have a neat appearance. Most importantly, check the weather and dress appropriately. Comfortable shoes are also encouraged, as you will be touring post and walking to academic buildings.

How many guests can come with me?

The attending student is invited to bring up to 2 guests. Only the attending student is allowed in Barracks.

How should I inform the Open House team if a member of my party has limited mobility?

Please contact the Office of Admissions at 540-464-7211 at least two weeks prior to the Open House or as soon as possible to arrange accommodations.

What do I bring for the overnight in Barracks?

Sleeping bag, pillow, change of clothes, and toiletries. Your basic necessity items for an overnight stay. Pack light! There is no physical activity planned for the students attending.

Can parents/guests attend Open House events?

The VMI Open House is designed to be informational for both students and their parent(s)/guardian(s). It's beneficial for parents/guardians to participate in both day 1 and day 2 events. Sample Itinerary

Where do parents/guests stay in Lexington?

Parents/guardians and guests will need to find their own accommodations for the night. There are several options. Lodging and other local restaurants and activities can be found at lexingtonvirginia.com.

Can I request to room with someone that I know who currently attends VMI?

If you would like to request a room with a specific cadet during your Open House stay, you may send that quest via email to openhouse@vmi.edu. We will make every effort to pair you with the requested host.

I am a sophomore, and I have a sibling who is a current cadet, may I attend an Open House?

We love your enthusiasm, but the VMI Open House programs are created for high school juniors, seniors, and college transfer students. We look forward to welcoming you next year!

When will I receive details and an itinerary for the Open House I'm attending?

You should have received a confirmation email (student's email) upon submitting your registration form. A check-in email will be sent to all registrants one week prior to the event once the roster is complete. Please review this sample itinerary for overall program details. If there are any changes to an Open House itinerary, all registrants will be informed.

Can I schedule a one-on-one interview with Admissions while I'm there?

Yes, there will be time built into the schedule, please request an interview online prior to the event.

Will my parent/guardian be with me the whole time?

The itinerary is set with parents in mind. On the first day, you will spend most sessions together, apart from the ROTC presentation, until after the parade. On the second day, you meet back up with your parent/guardian after breakfast until the program ends (around 10:00 a.m.).

Can I attend without a parent/guardian?

The event is planned with parent/guardian attendance in mind; however, students are more than welcome to attend on their own. A parent or guardian's contact information is needed when registering for an Open House program.

What do I do if I registered but now I can't make it?

Life happens, and we understand. To assist us in preparation for this event, please notify VMI as soon as possible that you wish to cancel your registration. Return to your original registration email to find your unique link, email openhouse@vmi.edu, or call 540-464-7211 as soon as you know you are unable to attend.
