Nobel Laureate Speaks at VMI

Oleksandra Matviichuk

LEXINGTON, VA, Jan. 27, 2025—Virginia Military Institute welcomes Oleksandra Matviichuk, Ukrainian lawyer and global human rights defender, Monday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. in Gillis Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

Matviichuk is founder and head of the Center for Civil Liberties (CCL), which has documented crimes committed by the Russian Federation during its invasion of Ukraine. In 2022, the CCL was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its promotion of the “right to criticize power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens” and its efforts to “document war crimes, human rights abuses, and the abuse of power.”

The event is arranged by the Department of International Studies and Political Science and sponsored by the Dean’s Academic Speakers Program.
