Hours

The museum is open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Directions

Do not be confused by a neighboring property beside the Days Inn, this is a private business and is not affiliated with the Commonwealth of Virginia. Follow the brown and blue signs along the Interstate and Route 305 until you arrive at the circular Virginia Museum of the Civil War. If you are unsure if you are at the correct museum, call: 540-740-3101.

Driving Directions

Take Exit 264 off I-81 onto Rt. 211 West.
Take immediate right onto Rt. 305 (George Collins Parkway).
Continue north up the road and underneath a Commonwealth of Virginia sign overhead.
The circular Virginia Museum of the Civil War building is located at the end of the parkway.

*Farm & Field Package admission rates are not available during our events. Event rates will be listed on the museum’s events page.

**Self-guided group reservations must be made and confirmed at least one week in advance. Minimum of 15 paying individuals to receive discounted rate.

Educational Group Tours

The park offers a variety of age and education-specific programs throughout the year. School group programs are designed around the Virginia Standards of Learning. More information is available on our educator resources page.

Public Tours

Guided tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays June -August 2026.*
Public tours are included with admission to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War at New Market Battlefield State Historical Park.

*There will be no tours during the week of July 13-17, 2026.

Did you Know?

Austrian Lorenz Musket, Battle of New Market

Cadet Charles H. Read Jr. carried this Austrian Lorenz musket during the Battle of New Market. The tremendous force of an exploding shell contorted the barrel into this shape. Read himself was only slightly wounded over the right eye. The bullet he loaded remained inside of the weapon until it was removed from the breech in 1999.
