Austrian Lorenz Musket

Battle of New Market

Cadet Charles H. Read Jr. carried this Austrian Lorenz musket during the Battle of New Market. The tremendous force of an exploding shell contorted the barrel into this shape. Read himself was only slightly wounded over the right eye. The bullet he loaded remained inside of the weapon until it was removed from the breech in 1999.

Educational Group Tours 

The park offers a variety of age and education-specific programs throughout the year. School group programs are designed around the Virginia Standards of Learning. Visit the museum's Tour Page for more information on guided group programs.  

Public Tours

• Guided tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays June -August 2026.*
• Public tours are included with admission to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War at New Market Battlefield State Historical Park. 

*There will be no tours during the week of July 13-17, 2026.
