WHY DOES VMI HOST A STEM CONFERENCE FOR TEACHERS/ADMINS IN GRADES 3-8?
Approximately 2,250 Teachers with about 250 Classroom-Tested STEM Lessons Shared Since 2011
In 2011, the staff at the VMI Center for Leadership and Ethics created a conference to address the nation's need for educating and training new talent to help fill the overwhelming gap in technology needs and job vacancies nationwide, particularly in the Commonwealth. Initially, high school students and their teachers attended together to take part in STEM workshops, but from that conference survey, we discovered that our teachers preferred to take part in teaching workshops in a train-the-trainer style and to network with one another. In 2012, we made that change and never looked back!
The next big change we made was to target the grades which had the best chance for impacting students' STEM success - grades 3-8. Approximately 2,250 teachers in that time have attended this event and shared about 250 classroom-tested STEM lesson plans. We gather those presentations and lesson resources each year (previous years' lessons link at the bottom of this page so we're sure they are indeed fresh) and provide a link on our website so that anyone may access that content and reuse and SHARE time and time again! What have past attendees said about VMI's STEM Education Conference?
“I like the informal opportunities to talk with people during meals about the sessions, the proximity of the sessions to the main building, the activity during the sessions and the Q&A during presentations.” ~ Paula White
“The price was right, my level of learning was high, there was not a repeat of material from other educational conferences, and the sessions and workshops were varied enough to hold my interest through the entire sessions.” ~ Survey Respondent
“Very worthwhile conference. This is our 2nd year sending a team of teachers, and they all returned with activities and ideas to integrate into science, math and ELA instruction. Thanks!” ~ Survey Respondent
