VMI Seeks 15th Superintendent

Livestreams of BOV meetings will be made available, where applicable on the Upcoming Meetings page. Superintendent Search livestreams can be found, where applicable, on the Timeline and Meeting Schedule page.

On Oct. 26, 2020, Gen. J.H. Binford Peay III, VMI’s 14th Superintendent, tendered his resignation to the president of the VMI Board of Visitors, John William Boland. Gen. Peay served as superintendent since 2003. On November 6, 2020, in response to Gen. Peay’s announcement, the Board of Visitors appointed the Superintendent Search Committee, chaired by Mr. Gene Scott, chair of the Board of Visitors External Relations Committee. Scott retired from a long and successful career as a Regional Vice President for Verizon Enterprise Solutions.

The search committee is committed to conducting a professional, thoughtful, and inclusive search. With the assistance of an executive search firm, the committee will ensure that the VMI community has multiple and varied opportunities for input into VMI’s future (e.g., listening sessions, surveys). The Superintendent Search website, which includes information about the committee, search firm, process, meetings, etc., will be updated regularly throughout the search process. Outside of planned forums and surveys, input is welcome at any time during the search and may be provided by email submission to: superintendentsearch@vmi.edu.

The search committee will be supported and staffed by Col. Lee Rakes, Director of Institute Assessment and Evaluation.

Our school is a treasure and the lessons learned here make an indelibly positive imprint on our psyches that remains with us over our entire lives. I believe our experiences here lift us up and demand that we be better men and women because we know it is the right thing to do.
