Summer Workers - (part-time, temporary)

Virginia Military Institute is accepting applications for part-time summer workers.  Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.  Work schedule will be 35 - 40 hours per week (pending position), Monday – Friday.  Wage is $11.00/hr.  As temporary summer positions become available, they will be filled from this applicant pool. Positions, duties, and hours vary.


Grounds maintenance (landscaping, mowing, trimming, pruning); operation of equipment used in grounds maintenance; setting up and moving equipment and furniture; ability to lift at least 50 pounds.  Must be able to work outdoors in all weather temperatures and conditions.


Supports the receiving, shipping and inventory control section of Physical Plant by verifying shipments, maintaining control of inventory and issuing material to maintenance teams.  Computer skills required. 


Assist Facility Maintenance Teams with miscellaneous repairs to include minor carpentry and interior/exterior painting.  Must be able to use stepladders, painting equipment, and perform manual labor, ability to lift at least 50 pounds.


Duties to include floor care, cleaning furniture, and other general cleaning. Some work on stepladders.  Ability to tolerate a variety of cleaning chemicals, stand for long periods, and to lift at least 50 pounds.


Assists the Fire & Safety personnel with routine maintenance on fire and smoke alarm detection systems.   Must be able to use a stepladder.


Assist Lock Shop personnel with routine maintenance of door hardware. Must be able to use a variety of hand tools and stepladder.  Other duties include minor carpentry work, painting, staining and applying polyurethane finishes.


General office filing assistance, scanning, data entry, and assisting customers.  Computer skills required, including Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal background check.  Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team environment.  Qualifications vary based on assignment. 

Safety training will be provided.
