Department of Chemistry- Tenure Track Positions

Summary / Overview

The Department of Chemistry at the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA, invites applications to fill two tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor (applications for Associate Professor, Full Professor, may also be considered) starting January 1, 2024, or August 1, 2024. A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline is required, and post-doctoral experience is preferred. Applicants must have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Primary teaching responsibilities will be general chemistry and courses in their subject area. The new faculty member will develop an undergraduate research program in their field. Startup funds will accompany research laboratory space in our fully renovated (2013) facility.

  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, guidelines of VMI.
  • Maintains confidentiality, sound judgment and discretion in all areas of work.
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Requirements

Education

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline is required.
  • Post-doctoral experience is preferred.

Experience

  • Previous work experience in higher education or similar complex environments.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Must have a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrative staff, and students in a higher education environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow through independently.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, listening).

Physical

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
  • Work is generally done presenting, standing, sitting, talking, hearing.

Required application materials include: cover letter, CV, statement of teaching philosophy that includes the use of technology in the classroom and instrumentation in the lab, research plans that include undergraduates, and letters from three references.
