Sponsored Programs

The Office of Sponsored Programs works with VMI faculty and staff to enhance academic excellence through research, scholarship, and creative activity. Sponsored programs are conducted by Institute Member(s) and supported — fully or in part — by externally restricted funding awarded to the Institute. Sponsored programs may be research, instructional or service in nature. In all sponsored programs, the Institute has obligations to the funding source in accordance with the terms of a proposal or agreement.

The Office of Sponsored Programs is available to assist Institute Members to develop their scholarly and creative interests, and to encourage a climate in which students are actively engaged in the pursuit of new knowledge.

We also provide assistance by researching suitable funding opportunities, reviewing and critiquing proposals, aiding in proposal submission, and offering grants-related training and information sessions. We distribute information about potential funding sources and advise faculty in developing project ideas, constructing budgets, preparing proposals, negotiating grants and contracts, and reporting the results of their work. The office can also help with compliance questions, and project monitoring requirements for animal care and use; human subjects in research; and research ethics.

In accordance with VMI policy, the Office of Sponsored Programs must review and approve all proposals from Institute members intended for submission to external funding agencies, especially if they:

  • involve the use of the resources of the Institute (including personnel, offices, and equipment); and/or
  • provide compensation in the form of release time or extra service pay; and/or
  • require in-kind contributions; and/or
  • are to be administered by the Institute as a condition of the proposed grant.

Approval is obtained by routing a copy of the proposal along with a proposal approval form to the required offices for signature approval prior to the granting agency’s deadline for submission.

We can help determine situations in which applications for support are more appropriately directed through the VMI Foundation Office.  Please contact us for information about all phases of the external grant funding process.
