LEXINGTON, Va. Sept. 2, 2025 — Interested in growing fruits and vegetables in your backyard or on your windowsill? The Jackson House Museum will conduct a hands-on Kitchen Garden Workshop Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. led by Rockbridge Area Master Gardeners.
This interactive session will blend practical gardening techniques with captivating history. Guests will learn how kitchen gardens were once essential to daily life — especially during the mid-19th century — and how Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson relied on gardening not only to support his household, but as an enjoyable hobby.
The workshop will include instruction on how to divide perennials like hosta, which guests may take home; fall and winter garden prep, watch cover crops in action; seasonal garden care, what to cut back and what to leave to protect butterflies and bees during the winter; various expert techniques of seed-saving; fall vegetable planting tips and schedules; and the ideal fall plantings like bulbs, trees, and bushes.
Admission is $20 per person. Space is limited and early registration is encouraged by calling 540-464-7704. Participants will also enjoy a 15% discount on all purchases in the museum store on the day of the workshop. The Jackson House Museum is located at 8 E. Washington St. in Lexington.
