Deputy Chief of Staff for Organizational Performance and Risk Management

The Virginia Military Institute is pleased to announce an exciting professional opportunity. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Organizational Performance and Risk Management plays a pivotal role in advancing VMI's ten year strategic planning objectives. This position is instrumental in proactively developing and reporting Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), managing risks, and partnering with the Chief Information Officer to facilitate data governance and stewardship. By doing so, the incumbent ensures that the institute can effectively pursue its long-term goals and fulfill its mission.

Collaborating closely with senior leadership, this role integrates risk management, data-driven decision-making, and performance optimization strategies into the implementation of the strategic plan, cultivating a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across the VMI community.

This leadership position requires a highly skilled and experienced professional who can identify potential risks, implement risk mitigation strategies, develop, and report strategic plan Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and in partnership with institute executives, analyze performance data to support data-driven decision-making. The successful candidate will collaborate with various operating units, senior leadership, staff officers, and external stakeholders to foster a culture of continuous improvement and achievement in alignment with the VMI's strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that risk management and organizational performance improvement initiatives are closely aligned with VMI's strategic plan. Collaborate with key stakeholders to establish specific metrics, objectives, and action plans that support the realization of strategic goals.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments across VMI's operations, strategy, and compliance to identify potential threats and vulnerabilities. Develop and implement risk management strategies and procedures to minimize exposure and protect the institution's reputation and resources.
  • Develop and maintain a set of KPIs aligned with the institute's strategic goals. Regularly track, evaluate, and report on these KPIs, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
  • Prepare performance reports and present findings to institute leadership and relevant stakeholders to inform decision-making and drive improvements.
  • Develop and maintain risk management policies, guidelines, and procedures that adhere to regulatory requirements and best practices. Monitor and promote adherence to these policies throughout the VMI community.
  • Develop and maintain a set of KPIs aligned with the institute's strategic goals. Regularly track, evaluate, and report on these KPIs, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
  • Foster strong working relationships with faculty, staff, cadets, and external partners to encourage a proactive approach to risk management and performance improvement. Act as a resource and consultant for various VMI departments regarding risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions and workshops to raise awareness of risk management principles, data governance, and performance improvement techniques across the institute.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across the VMI community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, business administration, public administration or other relevant educational training.
  • Exceptional analytical, quantitative, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Proficiency in creating reports, presentations, business correspondence, and administrative record-keeping.
  • Strong multitasking skills, able to manage multiple tasks with competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • High emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate (MBA, MS, MA, etc.) or terminal (e.g., EdD, PhD, DBA, etc.) degree in business, higher education administration, information management, public policy, or a related field.
  • Certification or training as a Chief Risk Officer (CRO).
  • 10+ years of extensive experience in higher education, federal government, or senior leadership management/military officer roles with similar job responsibilities.
  • Experience as an administrator/supervisor in higher education.
