Assistant Director of Aquatic Facilities

Virginia Military Institute is excited to announce that we are accepting applications for the Assistant Director of Aquatic Facilities. Reporting to the Director of Aquatic Facilities, this position will assist with the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of the Institute’s aquatic facilities, Aquatic Center and the Cocke Hall Annex Pool. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides daily oversight of Clark King Pool.
  • Assists with the coordination of recruitment, training, scheduling, certification, and performance of student employees of the facilities; assists with the supervision day-to-day activities of staff and custodial employees. 
  • Assists with scheduling of facility operations and contract management.
  • Assists with the oversight of the maintenance of the pools, to include chemistry, climate control, cleanliness, and related maintenance. 
  • Ensures that all appropriate water, environmental, health and safety standards are maintained; ensures pools are compliant with all local, state, and national requirements and current on all necessary certifications required for operation. 
  • Assists the Director of Aquatic Facilities with the development and implementation of aquatics programs for students, faculty, staff, and/or members of the general public.
  • Assists to deconflict/schedule the Aquatic Center and Cocke Hall Annex Pool requests (academic, commandant, athletic, ROTC, faculty and staff, and outside Facility Use Requests) based on assigned priority times, General Order #1 (Operating Rules of the Institute) and the Institute Calendar.
  • Participates in and teaches aquatic and safety certification training sessions, as necessary.
  • Assists the Director of Aquatic Facilities with events in Aquatic Center and Clark King Pool including setup/tear down.
  • Acts as back up for Director of Aquatic Facilities. 
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate. 

Hours of Operations:

  • Monday – Friday: 0800-1600 or 0600-1430 (to cover ROTC AM Trainings).
  • Saturday/Sunday: as needed for events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field. 
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Critical thinking and resource management skills.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Certified Pool Operator. 
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor. 
  • Ability to get certifications within 6 months of hiring.

  • Ability to work independently in a team environment, take ownership of the resolution of problems, be flexible and accountable, manage conflicting responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrative staff, and students in a higher education environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow through independently.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, listening).
  • Ability to travel with the Cadets for various events.
  • Proven success with managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines.

Physical

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, typing, walking, marching, standing, hiking.
  • Visual acuity to use a keyboard, extensive reading.
