Assistant Athletic Trainers

The Assistant Athletic Trainer position is an athletic department staff appointment in the office of Sports Medicine. This individual reports to the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and works directly with the Sports Medicine office, athletic department staff, Post Physician, Team Physicians, and other institute offices. 

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Assist the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in all aspects of intercollegiate athletic team coverage for 18 sports.
  • Responsible for all aspects of medical coverage to include: prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and referral of athletic injuries. Primary sport assignment men's basketball.
  • Communication with sports medicine staff, Post Physician, Post Nurse Practitioner, and Team Physicians, and department administration.
  • Administrative duties include: manage claim forms in the insurance procurement process for athletics, purchasing of medical supplies & equipment, update Sports Medicine website, and CPR certification card documentation.
  • Serve as secondary contact for NCAA drug testing.
  • Provide athletic training clinic at the VMI infirmary.
  • Maintain full commitment to compliance with NCAA, Southern Conference, and Virginia Military Institute rules and regulations.
  • Contribute to departmental administrative efforts and sports medicine coverage in other areas as needed in athletics and the Corps of Cadets.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Degree completed in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Heath & Human Services, or similar field of study.
  • 1-3 years of experience working in the Sports Medicine/Athletic Training field.

Additional Considerations:

  • Master’s degree preferred in Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Exercise Science, or Health & Human Services.

  • Ability to work independently in a team environment, take ownership of the resolution of problems, be flexible and accountable, manage conflicting responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrative staff, and students in a higher education environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow through independently.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral, written, listening).
  • Ability to travel with the Cadets for various events.
  • Proven success with managing multiple projects concurrently while meeting deadlines.

Physical

  • Must be able to perform essential duties satisfactorily with reasonable accommodations.
  • Work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, typing, walking, marching, standing, hiking.
  • Visual acuity to use a keyboard, extensive reading.
