Senior Project Manager

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Facilities Management for Construction and Engineering, serves as the Senior Project Manager for Capital and Non-capital construction projects. Non-capital projects are typically up to $3 million in cost and 12-18 months in duration consisting largely of renovations, emergency repairs, scheduled maintenance projects as well as new construction. Capital Projects exceed $3 million and are up to five years in duration. The Senior project manager is responsible for day to day execution of their assigned projects and ensures they meet scope, budget, quality and schedule requirements from initial concept development through final project close out. Additionally, the Senior Project manager assists the Deputy Director in executing the Capital and Non-Capital construction programs by coordinating and synchronizing the efforts of the office staff, coaching/teaching/mentoring junior project managers, preparing and managing office schedules and meetings, conducting staff meetings briefing senior leaders and taking charge of the office in the absence of the Deputy Director.
Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities
- Serve as Project Manager for assigned capital and non-capital projects.
- Manage project budget, schedule, scope development and assure quality of work.
- Coordinate with outside agencies such as State Fire Marshal, Division of Engineering and Building, Department of Historic Resources, Department of Environmental Quality, utility providers and other local, state and Federal agencies as required to support capital and non-capital programs.
- Assist Deputy Director in managing workload, coordinating and synchronizing efforts of subordinates and staff, coordinating administrative and logistical support for projects and events.
- Coach/Teach/Mentor junior Project Managers and newly assigned personnel.
- Serve on hiring panels, A/E and Construction Management firm selection panels and contractor selection panels.
- Prepare briefings, meetings, conferences and special events for stakeholders and senior leaders as required such as ribbon cuttings, groundbreakings, synch conferences, Board of Visitors meetings and alumni events.
- Lead weekly staff meetings and perform quality assurance on required reports, briefing products and staff documents.
- Adhere to all policies, procedures, guidelines of VMI.
- Maintain confidentiality, sound judgment and discretion in all areas of work.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Construction or a related field required.
- Additional certifications, licenses or training in construction related fields such as EIT, PE, PMP are a plus.
Experience
- Ten years of experience working as a project manager for construction projects in excess of $5 million.
- Previous supervisory experience in a construction related environment
- Experience working in higher education or military environments is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Possess a thorough understanding of construction project management and construction best practices and processes.
- Comfortable operating, handling stakeholders and interacting with senior leaders in a military environment.
- Excellent communication and briefing skills (oral, written, listening).
- Knowledge about Virginia Construction Contracting and the Construction Professional Services Manual.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to follow through independently.
- Expertise with MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Physical
- Work outside up to 25% of the time in various types of weather and in noisy, dusty, damp and confined environments.
- 75% of work is generally done sitting, talking, hearing, and typing.
- Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
- Ability to walk over uneven terrain, climb stairs/ladders, stand/walk for extended periods and lift and move items up to 15 pounds.
- Travel up to 5% of the time.
Other
- Military retirees may wear the uniform and insignia of their respective services in accordance with service specific uniform, appearance, fitness and grooming standards.
- Occasional evening, weekend or holiday work may be required.
